In recognition of the vital role outstanding leadership plays in the promotion of U.S.-Turkey relations, the Board of Directors of the American-Turkish Council announced on December 11 that retiring Chairman Ambassador (Ret.) Richard L. Armitage, President of Armitage International will be succeeded by General (Ret.) James L. Jones, founder and President of Jones Group International.
In recognition of the vital role outstanding leadership plays in the promotion of U.S.-Turkey relations, the Board of Directors of the American-Turkish Council today announced that retiring Chairman Ambassador (Ret.) Richard L. Armitage, President of Armitage International will be succeeded by General (Ret.) James L. Jones, founder and President of Jones Group International.
With the completion of his current term on December 31, 2013, Richard L. Armitage will have served four years as the Chairman of the Board of the American-Turkish Council. He will continue to serve on the Board as Chairman Emeritus.
The Board of Directors and the corporate members and staff of the American-Turkish Council thank Ambassador Armitage for his personal commitment to a strong U.S. - Turkey relationship and for his highly successful leadership of the American-Turkish Council since January 1, 2010.
Corporate members of ATC, both American and Turkish, welcome General Jones and look forward to working with him to strengthen business, trade and investment relations, as well as the national security and foreign policy relationships between the United States and Turkey, two proven allies and friends. General Jones will begin his service as ATC Chairman, January 1, 2014.
BIOGRAPHY OF GENERAL (Ret.) JAMES L. JONES
James L. Jones is a Vietnam war veteran and former Marine General who served as President Barack Obama’s first National Security Advisor. He earned a Bachelor's Degree from Georgetown University in 1966, and was commissioned in the Marine Corps as a second lieutenant in 1967. Over the next three decades, General Jones rose through the ranks becoming Marine Corps Commandant in 1999 and NATO's Supreme Allied Commander in Europe (SACEUR) in 2003. He retired from the Marine Corps in February, 2007. President Obama invited General Jones to become National Security Advisor in 2009. He is the founder and President of Jones Group International, a Washington-based consulting firm providing national security and foreign policy advice and support to clients globally.
